What Are the Benefits and Drawbacks of an Online Pharmacy?

An online pharmacy, online prescription drugstore, or online pharmacy store is a retail pharmacy that operates over the Internet and delivers orders to clients via mail, electronic orders, or online pharmacy web interface. Online pharmacies can use among many different delivery methods: FedEx Office, direct mail, and telemarketing calls. Some online prescription drugstores can also use third-party processors such as PayPal, Google Checkout, along with others. The system used by an online pharmacy is usually based on a proprietary online pharmacy software system.

According to the United States Federal Trade Commission,"The number of online pharmacies operating on the world wide web has dramatically improved over the last year, by a few dozen online stores in 2021 to tens of thousands of shops operating in every country across the country. In various ways, the increase of online pharmacies mirrors the increase of internet health care - patients increasingly turn to online resources for their prescription medication." In a report released in January 2021, the FTC outlined some of the risks online pharmacies can pose to consumers:

Consumers should exercise caution when giving financial and personal information to an online pharmacy. Most internet pharmacies require potential customers to provide their addresses and names, email addresses, credit card numbers, and in some cases, social security numbers. Several online pharmacies utilize digital transport programs to facilitate the transfer of cash between the client's bank and the online pharmacy. However, that support regularly comes at a price. The Federal Trade Commission, in its evaluation of four internet pharmacies, noted that"scams regarding the transfer of information and funds" were found in two of those four reviews.

If a pharmacy asks a potential client to take a controlled substance instead of an advance payment, the purchaser should learn if that fee applies. Additionally, consumers should ask about the return policy and whether the pharmacy sells FDA approved drugs. Finally, consumers should exercise caution when purchasing through online pharmacy websites that require consumers to pay a fee to receive free samples of prescription medication. Generally, such websites are scams and won't provide samples of prescription drugs.
